This report presents the preliminary results of a Bureau of Mines investigation of the gasification of pulverized coal by steam-O2 mixtures in a vortex reactor.  The theory of the vortex is explained, the basic principles of reactor design is set forth, and an illustrative example of their application is given.  A method of calculating the composition of the gas produced in this reactor is advanced and has been checked experimentally.  The C conversion and the limits of operation have been found to be closely related to the type and uniformity of the coal distribution.  A method of improving the operation of the equipment and the quality of the gas by a change in the type of coal distributor from the conical to the spinning-plate form appears to offer considerable advantages.
