        Addition of KMnO₄ to crude MeOH and rectification to 75° gives a pure distillate.  CaOCl₂ and K₂Cr₂O₇ are not quite as satisfactory oxidizers.  Fe and Cu in the crude alcohol increase the rate of oxidation of impurities.
