Liquid hydrocarbons have been obtained directly from carbide with H2 as a carrier gas for water vapor.  Satisfactory yields were obtained at 340°-420° and a saturation temperature of 80°.  There is an optimum grain size of the carbide; smaller grains retard the reaction while larger ones tend to form more gaseous products.
