In considering the various possibilities of its chemical utilization, a survey of the present knowledge of the properties of CH4 is made.  Its chlorination, oxidation, thermal decomposition, reaction with steam, and conversion into higher hydrocarbons are discussed.  It is believed that the solution of this problem lies within the range of high-pressure and high-temperature reactions, which are now imperfectly understood.
