CH4 undergoes exchange with D2, CD4, and D2O on active Ni catalysts at 138° and above.  At 184° the rate of reaction decreases in the order CD4, D2, and D2O.  The activation energy of reaction for CD4 is approximately 19 kg.-cal., and for D2 approximately 28 kg.-cal.  The reaction is explained by an activated, dissociative absorption of CH4 on surface areas not occupied by H-D or D2O.
