Using a current of 3-5 amp. and 70 v., a mixture of CO and H2O yields HCOOH, while CO2 and H2O give HCOOH, and O2; CO and H2 yield CH2O, which polymerizes; CO2 and H2 yield HCOOH.  On subjecting mixtures of equal volumes of CH4 and CO to the silent discharge, acetaldehyde and its condensation and polymerization products are obtained.
