        Al2O3, MgO, and SiO2 activate Fe catalysts but do not make them stable.  K2O renders them stable but gives decreased activity.  K2O and SiO2 together form gives decreased activity.  K2O and SiO2 together form a good activator, but the catalyst is quite unstable.  K2O and Al2O3 or MgO and SiO2 gives a very stable catalyst.  Mechanisms of activation are discussed.
