Synthesis gas consists of a 2:1 mixture of water gas and high-H2-content coke-oven gas produced by thermal cracking.  Operation of the cracking plant is described as well as the purification of the synthesis gas (0.25% 02 is added for S removal).  In the synthesis process the usual Co catalyst is regenerated with H2 and by solvent extraction with Fischer-Tropsch benzine.  Coke-oven gas also is separated into H2, C2H4, etc. by partial liquefaction in 4 Claude plants and 1 Messer plant.
