When Ru powder or Ru-Th asbestos is used as contact catalyst, CO2 may be appreciably reduced to CH4 from 100° upward.  Addition of CaCO3 or Rb2CO3 results in the formation, from 170° upward, of higher gaseous and fluid hydrocarbons.  Weaker alkalies do not have this effect on the catalyst.
