A very highly purified mixture of CO and H2 (1:2) was allowed to react over a Ni-Co-Al catalyst in the presence of C6H6(I) at 190°; small quantities of toluene (II) and xylene (?) were formed (detected as nitrotoluene and nitroxylene (?), respectively.  The formation of (II) was explained through the action upon (I) of methylene radicals, intermediately formed during the contact hydrogenation of CO.
