CaC₂, when added to aqueous solutions of salts, precipitates acetylides, which can be purified by washing with dilute HOAc. Thus, with CuCl₂, CuC₂; with NiCl₂, NiC₂; with MnCl₂, MnC₂; Fe₂, FeC₂.
