Decomposition of FeO at 300°-570° is exclusively a solid-phase reaction. The reaction was followed by thermomagnetic analysis.  A phase diagram is given for the system FeO-Fe3O4-Fe.  The rate of decomposition was determined to be a function of the temperature of preparation, the concentration of O2 during preparation, and the presence of particles of Fe or Fe3O4.
