                  Equations for velocity of decomposition of CH₄ to C and 2 H₂ were derived and applied to experimental results at 985°.  The reaction was only 36% complete after 1 hr.  The velocity was abnormally high for 5 min. until the walls were covered with C.  The velocity constant is of the order of 0.15.
