                  The 2 stages are:  CH₂OH+CO→CH₃COOH and CH₃COOH+2H₂=2CH₃OH.  Catalyst for step 1 is sodium methylate and for step 2 copper chromite.  The process uses lower temperatures and pressures than the conventional method and eliminates side reactions.  Drawings and flow sheets.
