                  The 2 stages are:  CH2OH+CO→CH3COOH and CH3COOH+2H2=2CH3OH.  Catalyst for step 1 is sodium methylate and for step 2 copper chromite.  The process uses lower temperatures and pressures than the conventional method and eliminates side reactions.  Drawings and flow sheets.
