Considerable amounts of free HCOOH are obtained by the action of H2 and Pd black under pressure on CO2 in the presence of H2O; the HCOOH is decomposed catalytically into CO2 and H2.  The determination of the equilibrium between these reactions between 30°-90° gave no indication of the formation of HCHO as an intermediate product, so that it is unlikely that the formation of the latter is a stage in the assimilation of CO2 in nature.
