Processes for large-scale hydrocarbon production over past 30 hr. are chronologically briefly reviewed (decomposition of coke-oven gas, natural gas processes, high-pressure hydrogenation, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, and various petroleum cracking processes).  Details and flow sheets are given of processes for conversion of high-pressure hydrogenation waste gases to C4H10, C3H8, C2H6, and production of C2H4 from coke-oven gas.  Descriptions and flow sheets are also given of batch production of gas oil and gasoline from Fischer-Tropsch waste gases and of continuous hypersorption and rectisorption processes.  Disadvantages and operational difficulties of the various methods are discussed.
