                 Abridged version of a lecture before the Norwegian Academy of Science in which the author discusses the problems arising during the development from the laboratory to the technical scale of the processes carried out in the works of I. G. Farbenindustrie A.-G., namely hydrogenation of N2 to NH3, of CO to MeOH, and of coal or tar to gasoline.  The principal items dealt with are the production and purification of H3, the development of suitable catalysts, and the selection of constructional materials of high chemical resistance
