Pressure hydrogenation of charcoal and activated C gives CH4 almost entirely.  The thermodynamic equilibrium leads to certain conclusions on free energy of para-crystalline C.  Natural C gives liquid hydrocarbons, but since charcoal and activated C give none of them, their structure must be fundamentally different.  Presents views of the structure and reaction mechanism.
